Wizard World Austin!

The first major comic convention in Austin in a loooooooong time, and my first con since getting into comics a few years ago! I dressed up as Deadpool, and surprisingly was the only Deadpool at the show, so I ended up getting mobbed every few feet by people asking for pictures. I managed to snag a few myself though:

Art show pics!

As I mentioned, my art is on display at Austin Books this month! I went by yesterday afternoon and took some pictures of the show, it looks fantastic! Come on out and see it in person!

Hey Austin folks!

My artwork is now on display at Austin Books!! My stuff is completely covering their back wall in the back issue room, and I’ll be posting pictures of the show soon, but be sure to go check it out in person!

Starcraft II, and all its brilliance

I got myself a copy of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty the other day, and while yes it is a fantastic game that’s every bit as fun as the original, one thing that struck me was the music. It’s SO EPIC AND GOOD. Take for instance, the main theme, “Wings of Liberty”:

I mean, this is movie-quality music right here. Sweeping, epic orchestral score, punctuated by choral parts, it gives me chills whenever I hear it. Plus the nod to the original Starcraft menu music at the beginning was a nice touch. My personal favorite from the soundtrack, however, has to be “Heaven’s Devils”:

It’s in the same vein as the Terran music from the original game (makes sense, considering it’s the Terran music for this game), but as a friend of mine put it, the new game is much more “Firefly’d” in that it has a cowboys in space feel rather than just rednecks in space like the original. The fiddle parts and clean guitar parts really make the track for me.

In short, thanks to Blizzard for including such fantastic music into an already amazing game. Great music in computer/video games can really elevate a game from good to great, and this does so handily.

Bit of Awesome, E3 edition

Alright, so E3 was this week and there was definitely some sqee-worthy stuff to be had, namely:

Valve unveils the teaser for Portal 2! I’ve made no secret about my love for their incredibly clever Portal, and the fact that they’re releasing official details about it makes me that much more excited.

LucasArts also showed off the trailer for the Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge Special Edition. Unfortunately the game won’t look quite as slick as this trailer (which would be thoroughly doable), but if the first Monkey Island SE is any indication, I’m sure it’ll be fantastic. Makes me want to go back and play Curse of Monkey Island again…

Not necessarily shown at E3 but still falling under the “awesome” category is the new international trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World:

This looks like an absurd amount of fun, it definitely looks like they made the right choice in choosing Edgar Wright to direct this.

One more thing, E3-related:

I do not care about Natal/Kinect/Move. I really don’t. Motion control is a fad, a fad that if declining Wii sales are any indication, is going away. Yeah it’s cool to be able to play games without a controller, but seriously, how do you expect to play the biggest games on the main two non-Wii consoles with motion control? Modern Warfare 2? Halo? Killzone? Uncharted? It’s a novelty, and nothing more. Kinda like the current trend of 3D movies. Plus Kinect is an extra $149 in addition to the price of the console and games. Really?

Bit of Awesome, 6/4

It’s Avengers-o-rama this week

First off! Captain America’s movie costume revealed!!

Also full shots of Thor’s costume!

And a side-by-side comparison of the main movie Avengers

Looks pretty sweet to me, though I feel like Cap’s costume is a little too sleek/modern for World War II, though they seemed to have mostly adapted Bryan Hitch’s Ultimate Captain America design. Also, I was kinda hoping that Thor would have A. mail pants like the Coipel design and B. have a tunic that extended a little down past the waistline. Just the same though, it’s great to see the full designs, I can’t wait to see them in action.

Also, according to Jon Favreau, Iron Man will not be appearing in the Captain America or Thor movies like at the end of the Hulk, where Stark meets with General Ross to discuss “a new team.” Now, this may just be semantics, in that we won’t see Iron Man, but may see Tony Stark. Thor is going to take place in the modern era, and we know Agent Coulson from the Iron Man movies will be in it, and the Captain America film will be bookended by modern segments, so we may see Tony Stark, just not with the armor.

Last bit of Avengers news is that Jeremy Renner is just about locked to play Hawkeye in the 2012 Avengers movie. I still haven’t seen the Hurt Locker, but I’ve heard that his character has the same sort of deadpan smartassery that Hawkeye is known for. As far as the look, just dye his hair blonde and he’s got it.

Next up is this fun piece I found on Kotaku:
Valve High Five

I found this website a couple days ago and thought it was thoroughly fantastic:
Fuck You Flowers from The Big CaptionDrill Baby Drill from The Big CaptionHaters Gonna Hate from The Big Caption

As their tagline says, “wherein jokes and statements are made using typography.” So far it’s been goofiness like the girl kicking the flowers and seriousness like comments on the BP disaster.
